Alief ISD School Board Meeting

4250 Cook Road
Houston, Texas 77072

P. O.  Box 68, Alief, TX 77411

Also during this meeting Alief school board members will hear updates from the district’s School Health Advisory Council (SHAC).  The School Health Advisory Council acts as the Health & Physical Education Unit in the Division of Curriculum. This council provides direction and leadership to both the Health and Physical Education programs, grades K-12.  Last February I informed patrons via my e-communication that SHAC presented alarming facts to AISD board. Their recommendation was to change the districts' Human Sexuality Education curriculum to include "Abstinence PLUS."  Recent changes to Senate Bill (SB 530) have challenged SHAC to present recommendations to support Physical Activity Requirements for Public School Students. As with the decision to change our sex education curriculum last year, SHAC recommendation must reflect local community values prior to changes in district policy. It is imperative that the community provide input to SHAC by joining the council or participating in their surveys.  If you would like more information about AISD / SHAC contact Kelley Sullivan, Alief ISD Wellness Coordinator - 281-498-8110 x 4422. See also a SHAC meeting schedule is attached.

More Scholarship Opportunities for Graduating Seniors:  As an Associate member of the National Hispanic Caucus of School Board Members I support the Caucus efforts to extend ten $1000 scholarships (two per NSBA region). Please see attached the Scholarship application; please download and pass the information along to your seniors, neighbors, communities and churches. Application packets must be received by Friday, January 29, 2010. For information about NSBA/Hispanic Caucus of School Board Members and their role to provide a forum which actively participate in national dialogue on public school education issues under NSBA's aegis  visit their website: http://www.nsba.org/caucus

Any person asking to address the Board, will be granted time to make a 5 minute presentation at the discretion of the Board President. The opportunity is given during Patron Presentation and requires the person to sign and submit a card at the door prior to the meeting which begins promptly at 6:30 p.m. Please See rg_January 19, 2010 Agenda attached.
